Shariah compliance is more than just an industry filter.

Shariah compliance is complex, and we adhere to its strict principles. This means we exclude investments in forbidden or problematic industries and how much interest a companies pays or receives in interest.

At our discretion, we may also exclude any company that deals in un-Islamic products or services from our strategy. We have given AT&T and Qantas as examples of organisation we screen out and why:

View our Shariah Principles in details.

AT&T

AT&T is in an permissible category, however they carry too much interest bearing debt.

Qantas

Qantas although not a direct impermissible category, they sell alcohol and therefore are not considered shariah complaint.

Filtering out the bad makes for better returns

We filter out companies with high ESG risk scores, so we only invest in companies that align to our values.

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. ESG ratings are an assessment of a company's exposure and impact across environmental, social and government risks and how well they manage them.

  • This considers a company's impact on the planet. It includes factors like carbon emissions, waste management, renewable energy usage, and adherence to environmental laws.

  • This involves assessing how a company manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and the communities where it operates. Issues like workplace diversity, human rights, and community engagement fall under this category.

  • This examines how a company is run. It includes aspects such as executive pay, shareholder rights, transparency, and ethical practices in decision-making.
